SUMMARY:Weston Roundtable Series: Detection Dogs: Moving from the "Feel Good" to the "Really Good for Strong Science
DESCRIPTION:Detection Dogs: Moving from the “Feel Good” to the “Really Good” for Strong Science\nMany people have dogs\, and countless more feel an affection towards them at some level. Canines have been used for detection purposes for as long as they have been partnering with humans. In the past twenty years the use of conservation canines has exploded\, and their utility is heralded for applications from basic detection of wildlife scat to poaching applications. In this presentation we will look at detection dogs for conservation applications\, taking a critical look at one of the most sophisticated sensors available.

SUMMARY:Parking Lots and Sidewalks Salt Certification Class
DESCRIPTION:Registration Details: The Madison Salt Certification Program was developed in 2017. More than 300 certified applicators have been trained in Dane County since the voluntary program was started. The program is housed in City of Madison Engineering Division\, but it is supported in collaboration with Wisconsin SaltWise . This program encourages winter maintenance professionals to use the least amount of de-icing material necessary to keep parking lots\, roads\, sidewalks and driveways safe. This training will provide knowledge to pass the Salt Certification Exam and have you listed as a certified salt applicator. The training will focus on parking lots\, sidewalks and trails. It will cover pre-storm preparation\, equipment calibration guidance\, application rates\, de-icer selection and more. The goal of the training is to educate winter maintenance professionals on how to use the least amount of de-icing materials necessary to keep pavements safe throughout the winter. Coffee\, bagels\, and lunch will be included with the registration fee of $12.00. Registration will be capped at 55 people for this training session.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Energy Seminar Series: Bacterial Genetics and Biofuel Production
DESCRIPTION:In this Sustainable Energy Seminar\, Jason Peters\, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy\, will discuss the use of novel techniques to generate bacteria optimized for biofuel production. \nAbstract \nBacterial genes encode proteins that enable cells to produce biofuels and to survive biofuel production conditions. The study and manipulation of bacterial genes—known as bacterial genetics—can be used to generate bacteria that produce from plant material more efficiently. Here\, I will describe modern techniques in bacterial genetics and how these techniques can be used to optimize biofuel production. I will then focus specifically on my group’s efforts in developing CRISPR-based genetic approaches in the biofuel relevant bacterium Zymomonas mobilis.

SUMMARY:Weston Roundtable Series: Ethics and the Social Cost of Carbon
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Paul Kelleher\, Associate Professor\, Departments of Philosophy & Bioethics\, University of Wisconsin-Madison \nThe Nobel Prize-winning economist William Nordhaus has called the Social Cost of Carbon (SCC) “the most important single concept in the economics of climate change.” This talk will explicate the SCC concept\, in part by distinguishing between two very different types of SCC. It will then explore the complicated role of ethics in the construction of SCC values and in the way those values are used by policymakers.

SUMMARY:Climate\, People and the Environment Program Seminar: A Paleoclimate Perspective on Large-scale Climate Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Valerie Trouet\, Associate Professor\, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research\, University of Arizona \nAbstract:\nI will present two studies in which we used tree-ring data to reconstruct long-term variability in (1) jet stream position and (2) the extent of the Northern Hemisphere tropical belt. I will discuss what our reconstructions tell us about past variability in these climate patterns\, how they are linked to ecosystem and human history\, and why this information is important for future climate research.

SUMMARY:Weston Roundtable Series: Mission Innovation\, Not Mission Impossible: How Can Policy Accelerate Clean Energy Innovation?
DESCRIPTION:Jacquelyn Pless\, Assistant Professor\, MIT Sloan School of Management. \nDecarbonizing the energy sector will play a fundamental role in combatting climate change\, but doing so at low cost will require substantial innovation. Hundreds of billions of public dollars are spent subsidizing R&D globally each year. Is this enough? Are these resources spent wisely? How can policy help drive clean energy innovation at speed and scale? This discussion will address what we know so far about what works\, and perhaps more important\, propose questions that research must still address.
