Water@UW-Madison recruited Holly Walter Kerby and Jessica Courtier of Wisconsin Story Works to host a 90-minute workshop, “What Story Can Teach Us About Science Communication”, following the morning spring symposium on May 9th, 2018. The workshop was designed to teach basic elements and principles of story; with the aid of a 1-page template that outlined the framework for a science story, participants iteratively developed, shared, and provided feedback to one another on their short (~3-minute) research or science talks. There were 34 participants, 12 of whom were graduate students. Post-survey feedback indicates that most participants felt it was a valuable training and many would like to see more trainings or longer trainings like this. One table even stayed after the workshop ended to continue sharing their research stories with one another.
