Research Summary
My group is developing and applying computational and experimental approaches to study the links between microbes, viruses, biogeochemistry, and human health across a variety of scales in nature (from single cells, to communities, to entire ecosystems). Our studies span the breadth of environmental microbiomes ranging from freshwater, marine, to soil. We combine field-based sampling (including sampling in the deep-sea using submarines and remotely operated vehicles [ROVs]), laboratory experiments, and computational biology. Specifically, we focus on conducting long-term studies in environmental systems towards studying and tracking viral ecology and evolution, and the roles of viruses in environmental health.
