Research Summary
I am the director of Upham Woods, a residential outdoor learning center operated by the University of Wisconsin – Madison Division of Extension. The center offers a beautiful setting for undergraduate and graduate research, education on the natural and cultural history of Wisconsin, and outdoor recreation to support the physical and mental health and well-being of youth and adult participants. Our campus rests on 320 acres of forested land, including a 210-acre designated State Natural Area called “Blackhawk Island.” The facility consists of 14 buildings, supplying lodging and meals for up to 200 people. Upham's mission is to, ""provide educational opportunities to youth, youth leaders, and adults through programs focused on environmental and leadership education.” We offer outdoor education programming year-round for youth and youth leaders, including environmental education and outdoor recreation programs for school, scout and church groups; 4-H summer camp and family camps; professional development workshops, and conferences and retreats. Activities include Blackhawk Island hikes, canoeing and Voyageur canoeing, swimming, fishing, live animal programs, and team building on our low-element challenge course. Winter activities include snowshoeing, animal signs, and outdoor survival.
