Like people on land, fish in the sea are also greatly affected by climate change. Those in fisheries management, like my collaborator, Paul Frater, work toward a future where fish can thrive. By collecting data, researchers can better manage fish populations to ensure their sustainability in the future. As more data is gathered, there is a greater chance to give these fish a better life. My goal for this piece was to share that message.
I enjoy creating art that brings together digital and traditional art-making practices. It’s exciting to see what new effects and styles can be created when opposites come together. Similarly, I was able to combine contrasting ideas into this piece. Fisheries management is a very data-driven occupation. I wanted to take that idea and depict it in a new way, by using fluid patterns and forms with abstract storytelling. To do this, I used many different art mediums. This piece uses paste paper as background elements along with photos and digital drawings on top. The result is a collage depicting technology, data, and nature working together.
