Panarchy Theory by Kendall Salter

9:30 minutes

In Collaboration with Joseph Mrnak, UW-Madison, Center for Limnology & Wisconsin DNR

Panarchy Theory is based on the methods used to manage the invasive rainbow smelt population in inland Wisconsin lakes and the Laurentian Great Lakes region. The music is split into four short movements which connect the struggles of romance with the four stages of the adaptive cycle: growth, conservation, release, and reorganization.

Listen for the different interweaving and fluctuating musical elements which seamlessly alter the style of the music. The uncomfortable yet influential nature of change is presented in this piece with lush, aquatic, and ambient instrumentals. Science and art are not often associated with one another, but finding the common themes between the natural world and the creative process are invaluable for our understanding of Earth and ourselves.
