Support Frame: 2′ x 1.5′ x 5′; Canvas: 2′ x 5′ PVC pipes, acrylic paint on loose canvas, string, and plastic sheets In Collaboration with Cora Sutherland, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
In this work, I was inspired by the possibility of renewable energy in the Great Lakes. This work is a reflection of the ongoing open-ended conversation around nature and technology. My artistic process started with a conceptual phase around the aesthetics and elements around Cora’s theoretical work with renewable energies and policy-making in the Great Lakes. As I solidified our concept, I considered the impact of different presentation methods to guide audience experience.
My actual production process is loose and fluid where I paint on a loose sketch until it matches my intended aesthetic. I chose to paint on loose canvas to represent the fluidity of the cycles of the natural world as seen in wave and wind cycles. Expressive mark-making texture and vibrant, unnatural color palettes emphasized the sublime of nature. The scale was meant to immerse the viewer in the exploration around renewable energies in recognizable spaces in the Midwest.
