Water@UW-Madison hosted its 3rd annual Fall Poster Session on October 16, 2018 in the Sunset Lounge, Memorial Union. This free event showcases research, art, and activities about water in the UW-Madison community and provides an opportunity for water researchers on campus and in the community to connect over posters, beer, and refreshments. This year, we moved to a smaller venue (the Sunset Lounge) just outside of Shannon Hall in order to capitalize on community interest in a public talk that same evening by Dan Egan, author of the Go Big Read pick for 2018-2019, “The Death and Life of the Great Lakes”. In light of the change in venue and potential audience, Water@UW-Madison encouraged presenters to submit group posters that conveyed the scope of their water research to a broader community audience. Presenters responded enthusiastically and this year’s poster session represented 17 departments and programs in just 20 poster spaces. As the line for Dan Egan’s talk began to form and wrap past Water@UW-Madison posters in the hallway, presenters were able to engage many community members in conversation about their research. Feedback from 18 presenters representing 13 posters indicates that nearly all presenters talked with community members at this year’s poster session and felt it was a rewarding to have this connection to the public. Presenters also reported that they had valuable conversations with their fellow water researchers, a perennial highlight of the poster session. Another new addition to the poster session this year was an announcement of the winners of our first Water@UW-Madison Water Research Image Contest. The images and projects associated with all entries to this contest are featured in our growing Water@UW-Madison Story Map.
