In order to help our Wisconsin Lakes everyone needs to work together to keep the lakes safe. To do this there are people like Sara Windjue that help connect people to keep Wisconsin lakes clean and healthy. From their couple of meetings, Marquardt saw Sara’s main job as helping various lake groups work together and not burn themselves out, which inspired her to create Together.
Together is a piece about people working together to help lakes. All the hands are holding a blue piece of crochet that represents water and shows how the people of Wisconsin help to clean and take care of our lakes. It was an honor to work with her and learn more about what she does with lakes. Marquardt had never known about the many groups that work on lakes in Wisconsin. She decided to crochet this piece because that is Marquardt primary medium. It is an easily accessible and easy to transport way to work.
Through The Flow Project Marquardt was able to learn many things about the lakes of Wisconsin and learn about my own work as well. This piece is intended to help people to see the work that goes into helping our lakes. Marquardt has crocheted and observed water in the past and this piece showed her the work that it takes to keep the water she has observed her whole life clean.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Abigail Marquardt was raised in Coleman Wisconsin and currently lives in Green Bay Wisconsin. She attends college at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and is working towards her BA in Art Education and Studio Arts with an emphasis in Textiles. She has worked primarily in crochet and sculpture and her color palette usually includes natural colors. Lately she has been playing around with crocheting items from nature into her works and weaving. Explore her website here.
ABOUT THE Water Partner
Sara Windjue is the Leadership and Capacity Development Specialist with Extension Lakes, a program of the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. Previous to her position with Extension Lakes, Sara worked for over 15 years in the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education for the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP), also at UW-Stevens Point. Sara has a B.A. in Environmental Science and Biology from Adrian College, MI and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Charleston, SC. Sara, her husband, and two daughters have lake property on Lower Clear Lake in Langlade County and recently installed their first Healthy Lakes project there.
