Peeling Back the Layers

12” x 24”

Acrylic Paint, Modeling Paste, & Sand On Canvas

In Collaboration with Cayla Cavey, Groundwater Education Specialist with the Center for Watershed Science and Education at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point & Division of Extension at the University of Wisconsin – Madison

My work explores the different parts of the water cycle. Specifically, focusing on the movement of groundwater. The textured part of the painting represents someone peeling away paper to reveal the water cycle. The “torn” part located in the middle of the painting shows how water flows through layers of soil, decomposed leaves, sandstone, and dolomite etc. This process exists and happens within an aquifer, underground layers filled with rocks and sediment that naturally filter many contaminants, stores water, and then transmits the ground water across the landscape.

I chose acrylic paint because it is fast drying, allowing me to build up the layers of color quickly. I also included textured modeling paste to create the 3-D effect of ripped paper. This texture helps distinguish the visible elements of the water cycle and the hidden processes occurring behind it. To create this piece, I began by researching and collaborating with a water professional, then sketched a small detailed piece with colored pencil. From there I started my painting using basic shapes and then refined the details.

As an artist, I like to explore the beauty of nature. In each artwork I create, I want to inspire the viewers to think about what lies beneath the surface and to develop an appreciation for the nature around them.
